Orthopedic sandals of the German company Birkenstock are now popular with fashionistas, bloggers, stars, they can be found on the catwalks and in glossy lookbooks. Let's find out how the brand's history began and how these sandals, unassuming in appearance, managed to conquer the whole world.

Brand history

Mention of the first shoemaker by the name of Birkenstock comes in 1774. More than a century later, in 1896, Konrad Birkenstock continued the craft of his ancestor, which grew to two shoe stores in Frankfurt am Main.

In 1902, there was a real revolution in the world of shoes - he presented to the world an innovative orthopedic insole that repeats the curves of the foot. This year can be considered the beginning of the long journey of the Birkenstock brand.

When World War I began, it was this company that manufactured orthopedic shoes for wounded German soldiers.

In the 1920s, production grew to such an extent that the owners seriously thought about buying a plant. In 1925, they acquired a factory in Friedberg, where, among other things, they began to produce unique orthopedic insoles - Blue Footbed, and the brand began to be supplied throughout Europe.

In 1932 it was decided to hold orthopedic seminars attended by leading specialists and physicians from around the world. They unanimously adopted the Birkenstock system as an authoritative guide to orthopedics.

In the early 60s sandals were created, which became widespread as shoes for fitness. He developed a unique flexible material that served as a sole for shoes, which today is known as birkenstocks.

But they received their total distribution thanks to the American Margot Fraser, who on vacation in Germany offered orthopedic sandals as a means of getting rid of leg pain.

They were so pleased by enterprising Margo that when she returned home she decided to import Birkenstock shoes into the United States.

As is usually the case, she faced a lot of difficulties - the stores simply refused to take on the implementation of "nondescript sandals" that had nothing to do with fashion.

Then it occurred to her to put them on sale in health food stores. At first, the demand for them was small, but with the development of eco-trends and a healthy lifestyle, birkenstocks gained tremendous popularity.

They began to appear on the catwalks back in the 90s, but the women of fashion still did not look in their direction. They became part of the fashion bows only in 2013, when the casual conformist and practical urban replaced the total conformism.

The company itself has repeatedly bothered various American and European awards; one of the most significant is the UK design award, which never goes out of fashion and is suitable for people of any age.

Characteristic shoes

Birkenstock sandals and flip-flops have a recognizable design. Most often it is 1, 2 or 3 straps located across. Due to the presence of buckles, you can adjust the fullness of the shoe.

A brand-made orthopedic insole that resembles a footprint in the sand is embedded in absolutely any model. She keeps her leg from fatigue and helps to keep her posture correctly.

It is made of environmentally friendly material - the milky juice of rubber plants, so it also has an antibacterial effect.

The lineup

Today, the assortment of the brand presents a variety of shoes - sandals and flip-flops, boots, demi-season boots and even slippers.

Flip flops

Slippers "Birkenstock" are presented by three popular models:

  • Madrid - a model with one strap, which was invented in the early 60s. For a long time, it was a success as fitness shoes.
  • Arizona - a model with two straps, which is the most popular. After Kate Moss was captured in the picture in the 90s, spanking gained the status of cult and became the most widespread of the brand’s entire range.
  • Florida - a model with three straps, which is also in great demand among fashionistas. Thanks to a large number of jumpers, reliably keeps on a leg.

Sandals

The most popular sandal model is called Milano. It is an improved version of the Arizona model: two wide straps - across the foot, and one on the heel. This allows even more securely fix the shoes on the foot, which is especially important for those who are used to walking a lot.

Looks elegant model Rio. It is very similar to ordinary sandals - one strap in the front and another strap covering the arch of the foot. Contrary to expectations, this pair is not very popular.

Clogs

The clogs of "Birkenstock" are represented by two models - Boston and Amsterdam. These are slaps closed in front, which also resemble a clog. Amsterdam is a laconic model with no additional elements, and Boston is complemented by a brand strap.

Flip flops

The first five pairs of this model, which is called Gizeh, went on sale in the early 80s. They quickly gained popularity with Vietnamese fans, because they combine the stylish design and convenience of the classic Birkenstocks.

Children's models

The children's model range does not differ at all from the adult - in the assortment you will find all the above-listed models, only smaller.

The only difference is a more diverse design, models for girls are decorated with flowers, images of Disney characters and characters from other cartoons.

How to choose the size?

First of all, birkenshtoki need to pick up the full legs. By placing an order on the official website, you can choose a model for high and normal completeness (regular) and for standard and narrow. Each of them is marked with a special badge that is printed on the inside of the sole.

All shoes come in size to size, although some think that birkenshtoks are more than half a size. In fact, the stock in half a centimeter is specially provided by the manufacturer - this allows you to walk in this shoe for a long time and comfortably.

What to wear?

We can safely say that Birkenstocks are universal. They can be worn almost all year round - good, they are great combined with coarse melange socks. Consider the most stylish combinations.

With jeans and trousers

The most common option is to wear flip flops with various pants. They are no worse than other summer shoes look with tucked or cropped jeans and trousers.

A great option for every day for a walk and active shopping.

With shorts

The perfect summer look is the tails and shorts. This is a casual casual that will help out whenever there is nothing to wear. Shorts can be almost any, but the most popular, of course, denim.

With skirt

It seems that coarse sandals and skirts can hardly meet in one bow, but in practice everything is different. They look great with a knitted skirt pencil, with a full midi skirt length and a skirt of flying fabric.

With a dress or sundress

Oddly enough, these orthopedic flip flops seem to be created to wear them with a dress in a linen style. It turns out a spectacular game of contrasts - a feminine sundress on thin straps and rough volumetric sandals.

With culottes

These wide cropped trousers are still popular, so they can be easily combined with Birkenstock sandals. It turns out a very harmonious relaxed look - nothing constrains movements, legs feel as comfortable as possible, and you look very stylish.

Birkenstocks can complement not only casual, but also a sporty image.

In the summer, they can replace sneakers in any modern bow.

Moreover, they will look good in a businesslike manner if you do not have a strict dress code at work. Wear them with strict trousers, complemented by a T-shirt or a relaxed shirt.

Reviews

Most happy owners of Birkenstock shoes respond positively to it. Of course, there are those who consider it rude and uninteresting, but here you can draw an analogy with Uggs - someone loves, someone hates, but no one remains indifferent.

The customers note a large range, excellent orthopedic effect and excellent German quality. They show high resistance to wear and serve for more than one season.

True, you need to be prepared for the fact that over time the sole slightly changes its shape - as a rule, the socks bend a little upwards. It's all about the material from which it is made - it is quite soft. However, it does not affect comfort in a sock in any way.

The main disadvantage of the girls is the high cost - it starts at $ 30 per pair. However, if we consider the duration of the socks and the comfort that they provide to the legs, this price is quite justified.
