Sights of the city of Budva in Montenegro

One of the great places to rest in Montenegro, of course, is Budva. Together with the surrounding neighborhoods, it constitutes the famous Budva Riviera - the main center of tourism in the country.

The resort town is located in the center of the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, its total area is 122 km², and the length of the beaches is about 12 km. The coastal strip is surrounded by beautiful mountains.

The very first settlement appeared in the V century BC.

The resort is divided into Old and New Town. In Old Budva there is a feeling of medieval civilization, in it all the historical monuments of that era are concentrated. The new city is a place of entertainment, there is a huge number of hotels, hotels, shops and leisure facilities. Here lies the main Slavic beach.

This city will be to the liking of different categories of travelers. Mild climate, warm sea, well-equipped sandy beaches and lots of children's entertainment will be appreciated by families with children. The abundance of restaurants, clubs, discos, sports fields and tennis courts will appeal to young people and people who prefer to spend their holidays energetically and cheerfully. Connoisseurs of history and cultural attractions will attract temples, churches, ancient streets, houses and other objects.

For all the time of its existence (almost 2500 years), this cozy Montenegrin town has seen many epochal events. The Greeks are considered to be the founders of the city, later the rule passed to the Romans and Byzantines, in the Middle Ages it was part of the Republic of Venice. From the XIX century, the city became subject to Austro-Hungarian rule, after the First World War it was incorporated into Yugoslavia, and since 2006 it has been the main resort of Montenegro.

Usually from this part travelers begin their acquaintance with Budva - she is very comfortable for walking, here you can feel her medieval flavor. The charm is given by narrow streets and squares, next to which there are bars, cafes, souvenir shops and residential buildings. This historic place also offers accommodation for holidaymakers.

Old Town is surrounded by a fortress wall, which has 6 passes, through any of them you can easily get into the territory.

The citadel is a powerful fortress on the highest point of the resort, intended to protect the city from the sea. The walls of the fortress were changed 4 times, the first building was erected in 840, most of it was built in the XV century. There are towers, loopholes, barracks (XIX century), stairs.

Now, on the territory of the citadel, the work of the Maritime Museum and Library is organized, where ancient books about the history of the Balkan Peninsula are collected. There is a restaurant with access to the terrace of the tower, which offers an overview of the entire city.

On one of the walls of the citadel (opposite the library) there is a bas-relief depicting the symbol of the city - two intertwining fish. According to legend, many years ago, lovers lived in Budva, which parents forbade to marry. In order not to part, they rushed into the sea, but did not drown, but turned into beautiful fish that still swim in the Adriatic Sea.They became a symbol of the city and explain its name “Budva - there will be two as one.”

The citadel (as in principle and the whole of Old Budva) is attractive to many film crews creating documentary and historical films. A group of filmmakers brought a giant bell and an anchor for the film set. They fit so well into the big picture that they decided to leave it as a gift. Since then, these sculptures have attracted the attention of tourists.

It is a 4-storey building, filled with many ancient objects that were found in various parts of the country. Exhibits are represented by finds from the 5th century. BC e. to the Middle Ages. Here you can see stone plates with inscriptions, ancient coins, dishes, ceramics, decorations.

In this part of the city are the ancient temples: St. John, St. Mary and the Holy Trinity, which are still in effect. Inside them, visitors can see ancient murals, murals decorated with gold and valuable icons. Nearby is a small temple of St. Sava, but at the moment it does not work.

It is one of the most significant historical monuments of the country. It is located on the western side of Budvanskov Bay, above the beach Mogren-2. The fortress was built under the Austro-Hungarian rule in the second half of the XIX century to protect the borders of the city from the west. During the Second World War, there was a warehouse of ammunition.

The fortress is available for free visits, organized tours to its walls do not hold. You can reach it yourself, reaching the end of the beach you need to climb the rocks. A safer way from Budva is to go to the Jadran road and follow the signs, it’s impossible to get lost.

Due to the abundance of shrines Montenegro is attractive to pilgrims. But even simple, not sophisticated in such matters tourists may be interested in ancient cathedrals and temples.

The most famous holy place of the Old City, its first buildings appeared in the VII century. Due to natural cataclysms, the cathedral was destroyed, therefore it was subjected to reconstruction several times. View, which has survived to our days, the temple acquired in 1640. It consists of a bell tower, a church and a bishop's palace.

• Bell tower. Located on the north side of the cathedral and visible from any part of the city. Its degree of elevation reaches 36 meters. Rising to the top of the bell tower, you can admire the resort from a bird's eye view.
• Church of St. John the Baptist. Outwardly, it has a simple appearance, but the interior is quite rich. It houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary with little Jesus. It is assumed that it was written by Saint Luke in the XII century, revered by all believers.
• Bishop's Palace. Located on the south side of the cathedral, is a building of the Gothic style.

The current Orthodox monastery, founded in the XII – XIV centuries. Available for free visiting tourists. It is located in the northern part of Budva, about 2.5 km from the Old Town. It has the second name Subostrog. The names are given because of its location - in the area of ​​Main and Ostrog mountains.

The monastery stands on a hill, surrounded by a high stone fortress. Earlier there was the summer residence of the Metropolitan of Montenegro. There are two temples dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.

• Malaya Uspenskaya church - built in the XV century, very small in size, above it there is an observation deck, from which the coast is perfectly visible.
• Great Assumption Church - Erected in 1747, still held daily service.

In Montenegro, Saint Petka (Paraskeva, Friday) is especially revered, she is asked to heal from ailments, to find and preserve family happiness. In honor of this saint, small temples and chapels are erected along the roads (Friday).

Located near the monastery Podmaine, seemingly small and unremarkable church. It is significant that it has two altars, where services are held for both Orthodox and Catholics.

Of all the water entertainment centers of the Adriatic region - the water park in Budva is the largest, its area is more than 41,000 square meters. It is located on a hill, with its objects it seems that the coast and the city are far below, which makes the ride from the hills even more interesting and breathtaking.

Entry to the water slopes is allowed for children no less than 110 cm tall, but young visitors will not be bored either, for them there are several pools. The water park constantly hosts children's entertainment.

For adults 7 extreme water rides are equipped:

• "Gidrotruba" - the height of the descent is 17.5 m and the length is 60 m;
• Tornado - closed slide tube length 145 m;
• "Black hole" - a closed slide-tube, usually available in any, even the smallest water park;
• "Big Kamikaze" - the most extreme slide, is a descent into the pool from a height of 26 m along the steep edge of which is 67.5 m;
• "Little Kamikaze" - analogue of the previous slide, but with a lower level of descent - a height of 17.5 m, a length of 62.5 m, the speed of descent develops up to 80 km / h;
• "Rafting" - it is permissible to climb this hill with children, its height is 13 m, and its length is 122 m;
• "Multislide" - You can also slide with children, the descent has 6 parallel gutters, you can have fun with your family or company, starting a competition for the fastest descent.

As in any resort town, Budva has an active recreation park for children and adults. It functions in the summer on the waterfront. For impressions and unforgettable emotions, you can go to an amusement park, where there are, for example, the following:

Near the park there is a special area for active water sports enthusiasts. You can ride a water ski, scooter, flyboard or more traditional boats, kayaks, "Banana", "Cheesecake".

While on vacation, you can find many interesting routes to visit around the resort.

It is located just 1 km from the Slavic beach and is easily visible from the coast. It is also called Hawaii Montenegro because of the restaurant on the beach that has this name. The island is worth a visit because of the cleanest sea and cozy bays. You can reach it by boat, which depart from the beaches. The territory is small - only 2 kilometers, but it is striking in its vegetation and ecology cleanliness. The beach area takes about 800 meters.

The place of interest is available for independent visits, it is 30 minutes from the resort towards the city of Cetinje. You can get there by taxi, rented car or bus. The bus departs from the bus station, you need to get out in the village of Brijici.

The fortress was built in 1850 with the Austro-Hungarian rule on Kosmach hill, located about 800 meters above sea level. During World War II it was partially destroyed (only two of the three floors erected), traces of war shells are still visible on its walls.

Walking through an abandoned fortress, care must be taken, there is nothing remarkable inside — desolation and devastation. The more impressive appearance of the fortress framed by beautiful mountains is outside. In addition, the hill offers gorgeous views of the Budva Riviera.

The island of St. Stephen, is only 7 km from Budva. Previously, it was an ordinary fishing village, and now the most prestigious resort in Montenegro. World celebrities love to relax here. In fact, the whole island occupies the city-hotel. There are guided tours for tourists, but you can also go on your own to look at this magnificence by bus or taxi.

In the city there are many interesting places within walking distance. Fans of nightlife can go to the popular Top Hill Club, which is located close to the hills. On the waterfront you can also have fun at the disco bars.

Many vacationers love to walk on Slavic Boulevard, there is an abundance of cafes and restaurants, there are mini-markets for clothes, many souvenir shops, and sale of sightseeing tours throughout Montenegro is organized.
