City `s history
The Roman military camp Anderba, which stood at the junction of important roads in the 4th century, marked the beginning of Nikshich. Later, already in the 5th century, the Anagastum fortress was erected on the site of an ostrogy camp. The Slavs who came to these places at a later time renamed the city Inoosh. After the Ottoman conquest of the Serbian lands, Niksic received the status of a large Turkish fortress. When Nikola I Petrovich-Negosh stood at the head of Montenegro, the Turks were expelled, the city received freedom, and began to attract new settlers. At this time, he began to wear a modern name.
In 1883, architect Josip Slade wrote a plan for the development of the city, which was dynamically implemented over the next thirty years: trade, production, culture and education were actively developed. By 1900, the main sights of Niksic, the main square, and several parks were built. The Second World War fairly battered the city, but it was reconstructed.
Over time, the population of Niksic has tripled, and it has become one of the key industrial centers of Montenegro.
