Description

The beautiful city of Perast is located on the shores of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. Even despite its small size - there are only a few streets in Perast - this city will surprise you with its extraordinary beauty. Almost all the buildings of the city are architectural masterpieces. That is why Perast is one of the most popular cities in Montenegro among tourists.

Perast is often called the "city of millionaires." He got this nickname for a reason: almost every single architectural construction here is a historical heritage and costs at least one million euros.

However, in the distant past, this city was originally a village, and only then it was able to develop and make it what it is now. Perast was founded in ancient times by a group of Indo-European peoples - Illyrians.

In the Middle Ages, the city began to actively flourish. In the 16th century, Ottoman troops attacked the settlement, but this invasion was not crowned with success. The Fort of the Holy Cross played a significant role in the confrontation with the Ottomans. The dilapidated remains of the fortress to this day are reminiscent of a difficult time.

Since 1580, Perast becomes a port city. It develops, grows and flourishes: beautiful palaces, temples and other elements of rich architecture appear in it.

Now this city is a real fount of magnificent examples of ancient architecture, unique structures and at the same time modern hotels.

The main and amazing attraction of the area is the island of Gospa od ŠkrpjelaThe name translates as "Mother of God on the Rock." One very incredible, fascinating legend is connected with this island, according to which one day some sailors who fell into a strong storm without any hope of salvation survived by some lucky chance. They were thrown onto a reef located near Perast. Waking up, they saw the icon of the Mother of God.

In gratitude for such a miracle, people decided to build temple on this reef. Naturally, on one reef it would have been practically impossible to do this, for the church the territory was needed more extensively, therefore the inhabitants threw stones and other rocks to the bottom of the sea for two hundred years. Thus, by 1667, the Church of the Theotokos appeared on the man-made island.

It is interesting to note that in Perast even the custom associated with this island has been preserved: on July 22, local residents shed stones at the base of the island. This helps to overcome the threat of blurring the edges of the island. The interior of the church is extremely impressive: a huge altar made of marble, as well as walls studded with plates of real silver, will make an indelible impression on everyone.

And the main icon of the temple was created in the XV century and is of particular historical value.

In addition to the temple, the island operates amazing museum. And it is amazing that it contains weapons, utensils and an icon of the Mother of God, hand-embroidered by a woman, the wife of a sailor who has been waiting for her husband for 25 years. And, of course, another attraction of the man-made island - a symbol of navigation and navigation - the towering lighthouse.
