All about lavender fields in Crimea
Among the variety of flowers that exist today and can be grown both at home and in the fields for use in production purposes, I would like to highlight the lavender. This is a beautiful flower, which is famous not only for its appearance, but also for its breathtaking scent. It is so unusual and so amazingly beautiful that it is sung even in songs.
Features of the plant
Lavender is considered a universal and unpretentious plant, which very often becomes an ornament in the garden, and can also grow even without human intervention in the wild. Few people know, but in order to enjoy the large-scale beauty and aroma of blooming lavender, you must go to the Crimea peninsula. Yes, this is where its huge fields are located.
If earlier tourists who went on vacation, pursued the goal to swim in the warm sea and get a good sea tan, now an integral part of the vacation of almost every vacationer in the Crimea is a trip to the lavender fields. According to statistics, artists often come here for inspiration, newlyweds for beautiful photos, as well as just nature lovers and connoisseurs of beauty. And, of course, frequent guests of these lavender fields are lovers of easy money, who without a twinge of conscience snatch flowers for the purpose of sale.
A bit of history
Lavender is a small herb that is characterized by small beautiful violet flowers. It is said that during the wild bloom the fragrance spreads all over Koktebel, Tarkhankut and Sevastopol. Before we talk about where and when to look for lavender in the Crimea, let's recall some historical facts that will help us understand where such plantations came from on the peninsula.
Lavender was originally grown exclusively on the French and Spanish coasts of the Mediterranean. Several centuries ago, namely in 1813, it was brought into the Russian Empire and began to grow in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. The advantage was narrow-leaved variety. The flower got acclimatized on the peninsula, because the drought-resistant climate and rocky soil are quite acceptable for it. It is worth noting that the properties of the plant remained the same as in their homeland.
Today, lavender is grown on the peninsula primarily for industrial purposes on a large scale..
Thirty years ago, plantations occupied about 2.6 thousand hectares. Today, unfortunately, this number has decreased. For some reason, most of the fields were left unattended, and the plants simply died.
Flowering season
Of course, if a person who goes to the Crimea, aims to visit the lavender fields, you need to take a very responsible approach to the choice of travel time, because lavender does not bloom for a year. Given the fact that initially lavender is a heat-loving plant originally from the Mediterranean, its flowering period is not constant and depends on various factors.
For example, cold and late spring can shift the time when lavender begins to bloom. If you take something average, then the most violent flowering period falls in the middle of June - beginning of July. It was during this period that the most magnificent flower carpet of purple color in the fields of Crimea can be observed.
Of course, you can take a chance and go to the lavender plantations in early August. But, most likely, the expectations will not be justified.Already in early August, the flowers begin to dry out under the influence of the scorching Crimean sun and lose their original bright and fascinating look. Only the smell remains, but, unfortunately, there is no brightness of the color.
Do not forget that lavender is an industrial plant grown not so much for tourists to admire, but for use in perfumery and pharmacology. That is why farmers will not wait for the flowers to dry, they collect them in the required time.
But not all fields of lavender are under strict supervision, there are also so-called wild plantings, which were formed naturally by natural means with the help of the wind, which could spread the seeds of the plant in the vicinity.

And this is not surprising, because if you look at the endless fields that have a fascinating lilac-blue color, you can imagine yourself in a small French province.
