The legendary 60s of the last century - the brightest period in the history of world fashion. Not surprisingly, the elements characteristic of this era reappear on modern catwalks. Bold miniskirts, rainbow color combinations, precise geometry, large accessories and artificial fabrics at one time formed a completely new idea of fashion.
The emergence of new trends
By the sixties of the twentieth century, children born in the post-war period would grow up. Despite the terrible losses, Europe is rapidly recovering, economic growth is rapidly gaining momentum. Smart and energetic young people are in great demand.
Young people have great prospects, boys and girls are able to earn good money and lead an independent adult life. They want to prove that they are different from the older generation, listen to other music and demonstrate their style of dressing.
The financial independence of a huge number of guys and girls who want to demonstrate a particular style of dressing leads to a change in the concept of couturier activity. Mass consumption forced them to work not only for individual customers. Begins the formation of fashionable infrastructure, and the sale of certain models of clothing is legally regulated. From this began the fascination with popular brands.
The icons of style of that period were women who are still considered to be models of femininity and beauty: Merlin Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Jacqueline Kennedy. Then the girl Twiggy appeared on the podium, becoming the first world-famous model. It was she who formed the concept of how fashion models should look like.
Characteristics
"The concept of body awareness"
It appears and is widely distributed in the sixties of the last century. Famous couturiers develop clothes that maximally reveal and emphasize the beauty of the female figure. Wide trousers and a masculine style, which was so popular in the post-war years, is becoming a daily routine. Skirts are shortened to incredible sizes, getting the name "mini".

In the 60s, fashion was characterized by contrasting combinations of colors and textures. If it is skinny, dark trousers, the top always had a wide light blouse. Together with the fitting dresses combined wide-brimmed hats. Dresses had the shape of an A-silhouette. Very popular were the models with a fitting top and a full skirt.

And for dresses and business dresses more suitable pastel colors. Also at the peak of popularity were abstract drawings "psychedelic" shades.
Artificial materials
In women's wardrobes massively penetrates synthetic. On fashionistas one could see clothes made of vinyl or dresses with plastic inserts. The outfits were complemented with plastic necklaces made of large beads and bracelets. Chignons, burning false eyelashes, fluffy wigs, plastic jewelry and other "unnatural" was very acceptable.
How to recreate a retro look?
The young women of the 60s of the last century had a great sense of taste. It was intelligent youth who wanted to dress elegantly. Therefore, any appearance must be combined with refined manners and cultural behavior, otherwise the image risks to seem ridiculous.
Girls of the 1960s adored mini-skirts, sundresses with an A-silhouette or straight cut, turtlenecks, tight-fitting sweaters. In cool weather, a tweed jacket of dark blue, brown or pink with three-quarter sleeves is perfect.
In stores it is now easy to find clothes in retro style. For example, it may be a dress with a fitted top on wide straps, a boat neckline or bare shoulders. The skirt of such a dress, on the contrary, should be lush. Another characteristic cut for a dress from the past century is a trapeze.
Hairstyles were characterized by two radically different styles:
- High Babet hairs. Became popular thanks to Brigitte Bardot. This fluffy fluffy hairstyle on the basis of a hair has become a symbol of the 60s.
- Short geometric haircuts. Gained popularity with the release on the podium model Twiggy.
Most women of fashion loved exactly “babette”, despite the fact that making hair was much more difficult than styling hair with a simple geometric haircut. Also, the girls liked to do hair with curled ends up, and wear wide ribbons to match the dresses on the head.
Your outfit in retro style can be complemented with large accessories. There are not long beads or a scarf around the neck, and a large plastic bracelet on the wrist. Very fashionable then were glasses with round lenses or in the form of a cat's eye with a thick rim. The highlight of the dress can be white gloves.
Complement the image of makeup with eyes, underlined swallow arrows and strongly painted eyelashes. Lips enough to cover with a lipstick neutral shade or gloss.
Alternative styles
The first flight into space and other achievements in this area inspired the society of the 60s of the twentieth century, initiating the "cosmic style", elements of which are so fond of disco fans.
The famous fashion designer Andre Kurrezh at one of the shows dressed his models in clothes made of synthetic fabric of silver shades. The hats, resembling helmets, vinyl booties made the models look like astronauts or aliens. Other famous fashion designers, such as Paco Rabanne and Pierre Cardin, also catch up with this style.
Since the second half of the sixties, ethnic and hippie styles have become widespread. They were not popular with a wide range of young people. However, a colorful, shapeless dress in combination with long flowing hair and accessories made from natural materials is quite suitable for recreating the image of the 1960s, even if it is not traditional.
