Features of rest in Inkerman in Crimea
Talking about vacation in the Crimea usually means mentioning Alushta and Yalta, Evpatoria, Feodosia. They talk less often about Alupka, Sevastopol. But even such an “unobvious” item as Inkerman merits the attention of travelers.
Characteristics and history
The city of Inkerman is known from the 6th century AD. Originally it was called Kalamita (this name was used until 1475). And in 1976-1991, another name was in effect - Belokamensk. On 2 square. km, located on average at an altitude of 50 m above sea level, lives about 10140 people. Curiously, in administrative terms, the city can not be called independent - he is officially part of the Balaclava region of Sevastopol.
Inkerman is located in the southwestern part of the peninsula. The landmark when searching on the map is the Black River. It is there where it pours its waters into the bay of Sevastopol, and we must look for the city. It houses the railway station of the same name linking Sevastopol and the capital of the peninsula. Kalamita is a fortress that was built in the era of Byzantine rule to cover the approaches to Chersonesos.
The times of the 8th and 9th centuries were accompanied by massive religious construction. Within the limits of Kalamity a monastery is created. Even to this day came several cave temples hidden in a cliff cliff. Time was also spared by a whole series of cells that were put in several tiers.
From the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, Kalamita was controlled by the principality of Theodoro.
At this point, the fortress is used to protect the waters of the port Avlita. Gradually, he gets the same name. The successful location of the fortification makes it a “permanent prize” in the struggle of the Theodorites and the Genoese. In 1475, Ottoman troops seize Kalamita. It was then that the name Inkerman appears, literally meaning "fortress in a cave."
Being already then experienced gunners, the Turks remake it under the use of guns. But if Inkerman retained its military significance, then its urban part during the period of Turkish and Tatar rule was fairly degraded. And at the end of this period and the fortress turned into ruins.
In 1854, the famous Inkerman Battle took place here.
Only later at the mouth of the river are human settlements resumed. Now these were already separate farms. Since 1875, the Inkerman station has appeared, inheriting its name from the ruins of the old fortress. During the second defense of Sevastopol and during its liberation, almost all the buildings accumulated over several decades were destroyed. In the post-war period, the mountains located near the mouth of the river were actively used.
From here, the stone was taken for restoration work in Sevastopol. No wonder later the city was given the name Belokamensk. By water to the border of the Sevastopol territory is 5 km away, while on a land journey the distance is 18 km. Getting to Inkerman will:
- by bus (from Simferopol station in 2 hours);
- by electric train (150 minutes);
- by taxi (60 minutes).
Meteorological parameters

In January, sometimes the air is cooled to –5 degrees. The active tourism season starts in the middle of May. Its end falls on the second decade of September, when the air is cooled to +16.17 degrees Celsius.
What to inspect?
Among the attractions of Inkerman, undoubtedly, the first place is occupied by the male Inkerman St. Klimentovsky cave monastery. It will appeal even to those who are not too supportive of the Christian cult. The complex was built in the Byzantine period, more precisely - in the VIII century.
The monastery received its name in honor of Bishop Clement, who was repressed in the Roman Empire for promoting Christian ideology.
Finally, the construction was completed only in the XV century. The monastery is notable for the fact that it is one of the ten oldest in the world. The caves, where he is, were cut down inside the rocks by the monks themselves.
Important: to go to the monastery just can not. Only members of excursion groups are allowed there.
Kalamitskaya fortress, located on a rock, is no less significant than the Inkerman monastery. Along with surface structures, there are at least 300 fortifications inside the caves. Search for a fortress for a long time does not have to - exactly at the foot of the very same monastic buildings.
If both monuments of antiquity are already inspected, it is necessary to go to the factory of vintage wines. It is very large in Inkerman - one of the top 3 wineries of the peninsula.
From the monuments of nature is worth mentioning Chernorechensky canyon. Its length is 12 km, and its depth is 13 m. Adventurers and romantics rush willingly to this place. About 1/6 of the canyon is officially recognized as a protected area. Although it is not forbidden to visit it, visitors to the gorge should be prepared for an abundance of large stones and massive blockages.
The left part of the canyon can be passed only from the Baidar valley. On the right, all sections are impassable up to Kizil-Kai. In some places you can not avoid the transition to the other side.
Important: in the canyon and around it rains can suddenly begin. Before going there you should be familiar with the weather forecast.
Those who come with their families will always enjoy the entertainment center "Monsoon". His rides are designed for both teenagers and very young children. And adults will be happy to have the opportunity to play bowling or take a ride on the ice rink. In Inkerman there are 2 beaches. One of them (urban) is located on the seashore and stretches only 50 m in length.
In this place the coast is covered with sand and pebbles. Twice as long the beach near the old quarry. It is flooded with exceptionally clear water, which, however, is cold even in hot weather. Visiting a career beach with young children is therefore not very comfortable.
The inconvenience is caused by the limestone crumb covering the shore.
Returning to the wineries of Inkerman, it is necessary to point out that this industry has been developing in the city for a very long time. Only the Turkish conquest crushed for a time the tradition established by the Greeks and supported by the Genoese. Revival begins after the annexation of the former Crimean Khanate. Since 1961, the main winery has been operating, using breakthrough technologies developed abroad. The company’s collection includes semi-dry, dry, semi-sweet, sweet, vintage, strong and sparkling wines.
Wishing to purchase wine products of the plant, it is better and more profitable to go on an organized excursion. The participants will be shown oak barrels in the basement. About manufacturing technology tell the most detail.
