This breed of cats is considered one of the most attractive in the world. After all, there is no person who can indifferently pass by such a cute animal with original hanging ears.
Historical data
This is a relatively young breed. Breeding lop-eared cats began in 1961. A start was made in Scotland in the Rossi farm family. They saw an unusual kitten at the neighbors, whose ears were not sticking up, but, on the contrary, hung down. Farmers were fascinated by this pretty creature. When after 2 years the cats had kittens, they took one of them.
And although the members of the Rossi family have never been true professional breeders, they were expected to succeed. In the first year a kitten was born with hanging ears. A few years later he was crossed with a smooth-bred British cat. The result was the emergence of a new species of animals. In 1966, this breed was officially registered as independent. To date, Scottish cats have gained recognition and become popular.
Such an interesting appearance is directly related with a genetic mutation. But the gene responsible for the position of the ears has negative properties: some kittens were first born deaf and with accrete vertebrae. It took several years to correct this problem. Today, there are 2 types of Scottish Fold cats:
- Scottish Straight has the usual erect ears;
- Scottish Fold has small ears that are pressed to the head.
In one litter, kittens of both species can be born. In addition, it is impossible to immediately determine what the subsequent ears will be. This can only be seen after 60–90 days.
Breed description
Among the representatives of the breed a special place is occupied by lop-eared cats of gray color. They are a bit like a British short-haired breed, so very often there is some confusion. The Scottish cat is a medium sized animal that weighs up to 6–8 kg. And there are other distinctive features.
- The constitution of such cats is rather stocky, and the chest is large.
- The back of the animal is wide, the hips are massive, the neck is very short and thick.
- The paws are also quite wide and thick, besides being extremely well developed.
- A flexible tail can be both short and long.
- The head of these beauties is a bit like a ball.
- The eyes of the lop-eared cats are wide apart and have a round shape, which gives the animals a slightly surprised look.
- Their nose is small, and their chin is quite powerful.
- The wool of these animals is short and soft, a bit like plush. However, among them you can find such cats, whose fur coat is long and fluffy. Since their ears are very small, they are practically invisible behind long hair. Therefore, these rare Scots are more like a ball of fur.
- The little ears of Scottish gray cats are very attractive. After all, they are practically broken in half and cover the entire auricle.
- The uniqueness of such cute animals is also in the fact that their color can be very diverse. Monochromatic and spotted specimens are found.
Color
Scottish Fold cats with a blue color are often popularly called gray. And this is not in vain: after all, the shade of their fur is more light gray than blue. In addition, it is completely monotonous and even. Such Scots have both a nose and paw pads painted in dark gray.Eyes are amber or green. In addition, you can meet cats with yellow eyes.
Particular attention should be paid to the eyes of lop-eared beauties. Their color in a newly born kitten and in an adult animal is significantly different. Most gray kittens are born with blue or blue-blue eyes. Their shade changes only in three months.
Character and behavior
These gray beauties have a very calm character. They do not like to climb the curtains or jump high. Animals are completely non-aggressive, but you can not call them cowardly. Cats just try to avoid conflict situations. therefore Scottish Fold cats are taken to those families where there are small children or other pets. The Scots quickly get used to the new situation and to the existing rules in the family.
Such animals do not like many manifestations of tenderness. They are very restrained in their impulses. They do not like being taken in their arms or stroked. However, they will be happy to relax next to their owners if they do not encroach on their personal space.
And although many such cats seem completely indifferent, it is not. They are very attached to the owner and devoted to him. However, they lack attention on all inhabitants of the house, so pets most often choose one of the family members. When this person comes from work, the cat immediately runs to meet him. This will not extend to other households, however, the Scots will also not show aggression towards them.
Lop-eared cats have one feature that distinguishes them from other breeds: they are very afraid of heights and jump badly, which is connected with the structure of their vestibular apparatus. Therefore, their favorite habitat will be the lower part of the room. However, unable to jump high, they can stand on their hind legs.. In this position, the cat can stand for quite a long time.
In addition, the gray lop-eared are considered one of the smartest cats. They are served training. But they perform tricks with great reluctance and only when they want. Most often, they do exactly what is interesting to them.
Scottish folds are almost not afraid of stressful situations. Even too annoying guests or a trip to the vet will not bring them out of themselves. All claims they will accept with dignity. This behavior is very convenient if the owners are going to carry their wards to various exhibitions.
Care
Care for such animals is not difficult. They do not require much attention. The only condition - they must be periodically combed.. It will be enough once a week. This will make the cat look not only beautiful, but also elegant.
However, if the pet has long hair, then it should be combed almost every day. Use a special comb with blunt teeth, so that the cat does not hurt. From time to time you need to bathe your pets using special shampoos. If the cat lives in the house and does not walk on the street, it is enough to bathe him 2-3 times in 6 months or to do so as it is polluted.
Special attention should be paid to the ears. Since they have a completely unusual form, sulfur accumulates in them much more actively. Therefore, they should be cleaned regularly.
Do not forget about the proper feeding of such lovely pets. For this you can use both industrial feed and natural food. If the preference is given first, then they should be bought in special stores and only of the highest quality. In spontaneous markets, they can be low-grade and therefore have few useful substances in their composition.
If preference is given to natural food, you need to take care of a complete diet for your pet. It should include:
- boiled meat, preferably chicken or beef;
- boiled vegetables;
- some offal, well, if it is boiled liver;
- sea fish;
- various cereals, such as rice, buckwheat, or oatmeal;
- some greens;
- vitamins that can be bought at the veterinary pharmacy.
