The history of the female coat

Coats can be found in the wardrobe of not every woman. The coat of this style is often considered a luxury or a thing "on the way out", and not casual outerwear. It is usually assumed that the coat is worn on special occasions, since, by definition, such a coat is made from expensive fabrics or from fur. However, this was not always the case.

The history of the coat begins in the XIV century, and the word itself came to us from the French language. It was then called the male cloak in the shape of a semicircle, which was connected in front with a buckle or straps. Very often, the bonded edges of the mantle were not left in the center, but shifted to the right shoulder. In Europe, this style of outerwear is often met on the streets, the cloaks were a “everyday” thing and were made of affordable fabrics. In the 16th century, the look of the mantle underwent some changes, but it still continued to be part of the men's wardrobe.

In the XVIII century. the coats were made of expensive fabrics, and the coats were made to diverge so that they would not cover the beautiful dresses. In the XIX century, the word "cloak" already refers to women's outerwear made of fur.

Manto was very popular in the early twentieth century. The French fashion designer Paul Poiret, who was famous at the time, created a mantle of luxurious fabrics decorated with fur. Not distracted by the attention of the mantle and later other popular couturiers.

Currently, the style of the 20-30s of the twentieth century is becoming increasingly popular, which means that the coat is also becoming fashionable again.

Features of coat-manto

Coats from other types of coats can be distinguished by the following characteristic details:

  • this type of outerwear is often made without sleeves, instead of them in the coat may be present slots for hands;
  • if the model assumes sleeves, then they will necessarily be wide or expanding downwards so that the silhouette of the thing, which should be in the form of a trapezium, is not disturbed;
  • the collar of the coat, if there is one, is usually of two types: shawl or collar-collar; round neck manto;
  • classic look mantle does not have through zippers;
  • The “classic” coat can be fastened with just one fastener at the neck.

The manto of the classic form and cut is a bit like its medieval “ancestor” - a cape in the shape of a semicircle or circle. The closest "relative" of the mantle is the mantle. Some styles of such outerwear, for example, a mantle with a hood, are still associated with distant centuries.

The length of the coat can be different: from mid-thigh to mid-calf. To date, shorter models are becoming increasingly relevant. They are especially in demand among women who sit behind the wheel of a car.

Unlike a fur coat, the manto's lining may not be warmed; therefore, such a fur coat is worn in the fall and spring and, if necessary, it is permissible not to take it off indoors. Very often, a fur coat is complementary to the evening dress, which implies bare shoulders.

What to wear?

Classical pair for a fur coat is an evening or wedding dress.

A cropped coat can be combined with almost all types of clothing. With a coat, they now wear trousers and even jeans.

Evening gowns are usually combined with natural fur coats. Casual style implies less expensive materials such as faux fur, fabric or knitted fabric. Fabrics with a nap can be selected for a coat-coat; for a knitted version, special yarn called “weed” is sometimes purchased. This yarn has a pile of different lengths and belongs to fancy types of yarn. It is made from polyamide or polyester, sometimes with the addition of materials that give shine.

The fabric coat is suitable for everyday looks. Coats of neutral coats of opaque fabric may well be appropriate in business style.

Retro or modern?

Recently, fashion designers offer models of fur coats of a wide variety of colors that are not typical of natural materials. In addition, if we take into account the diversity of fabrics and artificial materials, from which coats are also created, then the options for styles and types of clothing with which these coats are worn are becoming more and more.

Depending on the specific version, the mantle can be an ultrafashionable thing, an element of everyday style, or be suitable for creating images in retro style. This type of coat has a very long history, and in each epoch there were ideas of how the coat should look and with what it can be worn.

Recently, the coat is increasingly becoming part of the so-called street fashion, or street style. Here, the cloak comes close to its “distant relative” - the hooded mantle, which in its modern incarnations is also becoming more and more popular in urban environments. The free cut of such clothes provides comfort and convenience, because it does not constrain movements and is suitable for active actions and movements.
