Chinook belongs to one of the rarest breeds of dogs in the world, since there are very few of its representatives. These dogs are known to only a limited number of people related to cynology. Although there are quite a few similar animals, the true representatives of the breed are distinguished by special characteristics.

Characteristic

The breed is relatively new, it was bred in New Hampshire (USA) and is considered exclusively American. Nowhere else in the world are these dogs bred. It got its name from the nickname of the riding dog Chinook, the favorite of the founder of the breed, Arthur Walden. The appearance of such dogs was promoted by the need for hardy riding dogs that would have high performance and have a good speed in running. For the creation of the breed, animals of different species were used and for the first time the Chinook took part in a polar expedition headed by General Bird.

During the trip, they demonstrated their unusual abilities, transporting heavy loads over long distances, while showing quite high speed. When the need to use dogs for freight disappeared, the already small number of dogs was significantly reduced. The breed was not lost only thanks to the efforts of the Chinook Lovers Club organized in the 50s of the last century.which exists today. This organization is the only one in the world that breeds and controls the breed, which is still the smallest. Despite all the efforts of members of the Club, the international association of cynologists still did not officially recognize this breed.

Initially, the breed was intended exclusively for work in the harness, but due to the fact that different species of dogs were used as progenitors, animals have different qualities. Mainly they are used as sleds, for transporting goods, but they are also excellent as companions. Representatives of the breed cannot take part in exhibitions and competitions, because they are not officially recognized, but they are good in the role of pets, especially for people who lead an active lifestyle, like long walks and travels. In such events Chinook will become a faithful companion and assistant.

As such, the standard does not exist, but the main characteristics of the breed include:

  • height - 55-68 cm;
  • weight - 29-42 kg;
  • strong constitution with deep chest and strong back;
  • well developed body muscles, strong limbs;
  • small head with elongated muzzle, strong straight neck;
  • medium sized hanging ears;
  • dark eyes with black edging;
  • a close-fitting coat with a soft undercoat, which gives a slight red tint;
  • color predominantly golden-fawn, but may be lighter in some places;
  • males are distinguished by their larger size than females.

Although Chinook belongs to the “working” breeds, it has extraordinary grace and plasticity, which significantly distinguishes it from other “Northerners” - huskies. The breed stands out for its beauty: the dog's coat sparkles with golden, warm shades.

Pros and cons of breed
