If you want to get a sports, playful pet with excellent hunting talent and at the same time the ability to be a faithful friend, you should opt for a pharaoh dog.
This is a purebred animal whose appearance has not changed during the entire existence of the breed.
Intelligent and selflessly loving children, such a greyhound also knows how to blush - in moments of sincere happiness, her ears, nose and rim of the iris, really blush, which is unique in itself, like her constant smile.
Origin
Pharaoh Hound comes from the oldest animals living in Egypt, 2 thousand years BC. erand then spread to the Mediterranean countries, in particular, in Malta, where they were brought by Phoenician merchants. There, the Egyptian individuals became related to a population of local dogs, and their offspring took on an appearance that has remained the same to this day.
However, the Maltese residents to this day consider the name a borzoi in the place of the homeland of the pharaohs inappropriate - in their opinion, the animal originally appeared on their island, and the Pharaoh's dog was called by the British based on the similarity of the beast with the ancient deity - Anubis, mostly depicted as a bright red dog.
The breed has long been used for the then permitted hunting of rabbits, but this did not last long, and with the arrival of the Maltese knights was prohibited.
Since fishing for small game helped the island’s poor survive, a ban was soon followed by their rebellion, which is reflected in the chronicles of that time.
Kelb tal-fenek, as the Maltese called their dog, once in Great Britain at the beginning of the 20th century, at first the English dog breeders did not like it, but after 40 years the greyhounds were recognized as the official breed of pure blood.
Description
The main purpose of the dog is hunting, because the animal has excellent vision and excellent flair. The breed is called primitive, but only because the greyhound did not actually mix with other animals and has impeccable pedigree.
Appearance
In terms of appearance, there are established standards for the ICF, judged on the merits of each individual:
- the dog has a slender and muscular body of medium size with clear contours, her physique is distinguished by elegance and nobility;
- in size, the body is slightly larger than the height of the animal at the withers;
- sternum with curved ribs deep, not reaching elbow joint;
- belly picked up, slightly retracted;
- the animal has a stately, long neck with strong muscles and light curvature;
- head elongated in the form of a wedge, clearly marked with a round forehead;
- long muzzle tapers to the nose;
- ears of high landing, wide closer to the head, having pointed tips, mobile, being in a standing position;
- a bodily nose with broad nostrils;
- the dog has medium-sized almond-shaped eyes, widely spaced, mostly honey, amber;
- bite regular in the form of scissors, teeth large and strong, only 42 teeth;
- the croup is well developed, slightly sloping, contributing to the parallel posture of the hind limbs;
- the tail is medium in the form of a whip, tapering to the tip, covered with short hair, the permissible length is up to the hock joint of the legs;
- short shiny coat, no undercoat;
- the skin is smooth, rather thin and has no folds;
- the legs of the animal are straight with strong pasterns and elastic paw pads, set parallel.
Disqualifications, as a rule, are dogs with obvious deviations from standard indicators, as well as those characterized by increased timidity or aggressiveness.
It is considered normal if the dog has a red color, but all shades of brown and chestnut are also acceptable.
Black Greyhound does not happen, but according to the standard, it may have white spots on the forehead and bridge of the nose, on the legs, chest and the end of the tail. If white markings are found on the back, sides and neck on the back side, the animal may be rejected. When the puppy has such deviations, it excludes pure breeding greyhound.
A naked Egyptian dog is still the same animal, whose coat, contrary to the opinion of some, is present, but it is very short.
Unlike bald animals, yellow-golden skin color which resembles hair.
Character
Despite the great love of the owner and the household, including children, the animal may periodically show character and disobedience. This is explained by the fact that its peculiarity is the ability to think outside the box and highly evaluate one’s own person.
The watchman of such a pet is meaningless to do, since the aggression is not in its nature, but this does not mean that a family member will not warn loved ones about the danger of loud barking if he feels the presence of a stranger.
Meanwhile, barking can be attributed to the shortcomings of the breed, and you can hear it when the greyhound is bored, it remains for a long time alone.
There is another sin for the tailed friend - he, like any self-respecting dog, can nibble on furniture and household items, so you have to buy toys in advance. It is necessary to prepare for the fact that the animal will be anxious to treat their own things, not only toys - to the bed, bowls, house.
The beast will jealously guard its belongings from people and other animals.
By the way, the dog can make friends with pets if it grows up with them. That concerns the street territory, there the dog forgets about such details, and instantly includes the hunting instinct. And if he is not brought up, he can terrorize everyone.
The great advantage of the character of the Egyptian hounds is that they never show aggression, have a strong nervous system, are clean.
Despite the average size, animals are compact and require a minimum of space in the home. The Pharaoh Hound is a sensitive psychologist who understands the mood of a person without words, moreover, she needs constant communication. Possessing a good memory, animals quickly memorize commands, but in order to achieve complete obedience from them, you need to engage with them from an early age, as well as regularly repeat lessons already learned.
What is surprising is the understanding with which these animals relate to joyful and sad events in the lives of their owners.
Under favorable conditions, they never stop smiling, playful and cheerful, infecting with their cheerfulness, but if something unpleasant happens, the dog will experience along with other family members - some dogs refuse to eat, become lethargic, do not show interest in things, who always interested them.
If you are going to take a greyhound puppy, you should understand that he will not be able to live on the street - because of the short hair and lack of fat, the animals are freezing, so the booth and the open aviary do not suit them.
Lifespan
In good conditions and in the absence of diseases, the “Pharaohs” are able to please their owners for a long time - they live from 12 to 17 years.
The good health of dogs in general does not exclude some diseases to which the breed is predisposed.
- With metabolic disorders in old age, many pets are susceptible to deformities of the hip and elbow joints.
- Due to congenital dislocation of the knee joints, damage to the limbs of the animal is possible even with minor injuries. This is due to the underdevelopment of connective tissue and ligaments. It is possible to cure such an anomaly, but often it requires surgical intervention.
- Due to overeating and weakness of the ligaments supporting the internal organs of the dog, the pet sometimes has a disturbance such as obstruction of different parts of the digestive tract. The development of pathology begins with an increase in gas formation, and as soon as this symptom is detected, it is necessary to immediately contact a veterinarian.
- Pharaoh dogs suffer from allergies, and therefore any medication for treatment, food and hygiene products should be carefully chosen.
Doctors tirelessly repeat that the owner should not independently treat a sick animal, since the threat of immunological reactions is always relevant.

- high-quality nail clippers;

It is advisable to purchase all these accessories before the puppy appears in the apartment.
Tips for choosing
To pick a puppy, healthy physically and mentally, you should carefully examine the living conditions of the mother of the cub. If an animal spends most of the day in an aviary or even a cage, it is difficult to hope that the puppy will behave adequately. And also the parent should be well-groomed, have a normal, inexhaustible appearance.
Take puppies at the age of two months in accordance with certain requirements.
Your baby should have:
- small but tight tummy;
- smooth, shiny coat;
- live eyes (often blue, which then change color);
- cold, wet nose;
- straight, parallel legs.
If the dog's stomach is drawn in or strongly swollen, then, most likely, there are worms in his body. Curved legs are a deviation from the standard, excluding the pure blood of the dog.
If incomprehensible growths are noticeable on the limbs or ribs of an animal, this suggests that the puppy may have an initial stage of rickets.
In addition, a purebred animal has a high price, which can not be less than one and a half thousand dollars.
If the cost of the proposed dog is much lower, it is worth considering that this is, at best, a half-breed.
