Perhaps not everyone knows about the existence of dogs with such an unusual name - Pomski. This rather expensive decorative breed is widely popular among professionals and breeders, has a great demand in European countries and the United States. In Russia, Pomski is just starting to gain fame from dog breeders.

Appearance history

Crossing of dogs of various breeds is widely and for a long time applied in dog breeding. His goal is to create a hybrid with certain characteristics of character, other working abilities or with a characteristic exterior. The mixed breed has the properties of both their parents of different breeds, and sometimes representatives of several breeds.which was used for hybridization.

Pomski is a representative of the crossed breed that appeared as a result of the hybridization of the Pomeranian Spitz and Siberian Husky. Her goal was to create a miniature breed for domestic maintenance as a companion dog.

As a result of long-term experimentation, a unique dog appeared, inheriting from its parents only the best positive qualities. The new hybrid is called Pomski: the word came out as a result of combining the abbreviations of “Pomeranian” and “Husky”.

Husky

For the first time information about a dog, which is a mixture of breeds of spitz and husky, appeared on the Internet, where a certain user was interested in the peculiarities of character and possible diseases of this mestizo. The web instantly responded with heated debates about the real possibility of breeding such a breed, because the parents have such different dimensions.

The idea of creating an unusual breed, so actively discussed on the Web, prompted the breeders to begin experiments. One of these experimenters was the famous American breeder Theresa Peterson, whose specialization is the Husky dog. In 2013, she brought out the first hybrid litter. These first puppies and registered officially.

Following Peterson, many other dog breeders also began to breed these cute dogs. There were so many of them that expediency arose in the establishment of an organization controlling the activities of breeders.

In 2013, the PCA, the American Pomski Club, became such a body., which aims to maintain this breeding species at the necessary and decent level and to achieve the recognition of this mestizo as an independent breed with its own individual standard.

The peculiarity of the breeding of the Husky and Pomeranian Spitz is that the Siberian Husky always acts as a mother. Miniature spitz-dogs are simply unable to bear and safely give birth to such large for them cubs. Insemination is always carried out artificially.

At present, Pomski is still not a breed recognized by world canine societies. The breeding work of dog breeders is supported exclusively by the American Club of Hybrid Dogs (ASNS) and PCA.

Breed description

The half-breed inherited its small size from the Pomeranian Spitz, and the color of the coat and a distinctive distinctive “mask” on the muzzle from the Husky. The color of the wool is varied: poses are black and red, gray and white, brown, gray with a silvery sheen and a pale-yellow shade. The color of wool is not only solid, but also with scorches or spots, and sometimes it is marble.

The most common color for the breed is that typical of the husky - gray-white.

His coat is thick, fluffy, soft, medium length. A thicker, shorter and warmer undercoat protects against cold and moisture, while the top long and durable layer of wool protects against contamination.

The color of the eyes, which they inherited from the husky, can also be different: blue and green, hazel and hazelnut. Quite often there are cases when the iris of the eye is colored differently: heterochromia is also often found in husky.

Heterochromia in Pomski may be in such variants:

  • “Harlequin” - eyes are painted differently, for example, one eye is blue and the other is brown;
  • marble color - on the background of the main color of the iris are scattered spots and blotches of a different shade;
  • individual sections of the iris have different shades.

The dog's exterior can also be different and depends on which genes dominate the parent. The variability of its appearance is also explained by the fact that purebred parents are used in hybridization. Given the large variety of appearance, this breed is conventionally divided into several groups.

    • Fox species. Poses of this type have an elongated body (like a Siberian Husky), a thin, orange-like skeleton, a pointed muzzle, protruding ears and a smooth red hair with a reddish tinge. All his appearance is very similar to the fox.
    • Plush type pomsky The dogs have a small torso, peculiar to the spitz, a short, blunt muzzle, soft, dense and longer hair, painted in typical husky shades, and a thick tail, twisted into a ring.
    • White Pomski. This species is very rare, it is distinguished by larger size, monochromatic wool of pure white color and subtle outlines of the muzzle.
    • Brown metis with blue eyes, also being a rare species. The dog has a dense strong skeleton, a muzzle of medium length, not very long hair with a thick undercoat, painted in brown tones. The dog's nose is also brown.
    • Shorthair look. Has a husky look in miniature with thick but short hair.

Weight category is also different. The size and weight of the dog are influenced by factors such as gender, the size of the parents, the number of puppies in the litter and his generation. Boys are usually bigger than girls by 1-2 kg and are about 5-10 centimeters longer in height.

Dogs of the first generation (F1), whose parents are purebred spitz and husky, can weigh from 4 to 12 kg. F1 puppies inherit the parental appearance characteristics in equal numbers and look 50% like Huskies and 50% like oranges.

The adult metis of the second order is the result of crossing F1. It can weigh from 4 to 10 kg. Predicting the color and size of second-generation dogs is much easier.

The expected weight can be determined by halving the total weight of the two parents.

The height of adult dogs is small and can vary from 25 to 40 cm at the withers.

Metis usually do not receive diseases peculiar to their parents. They have a high vitality and good health, characteristic of hybrids of the first order. But this does not mean that they do not get sick at all. Diseases are most often the result of improper care and nutrition. In addition, they have a tendency to allergies.

      Character and behavior

Taking from their parents their positive character traits, mestizos have a peace-loving, affectionate, joyful and resilient disposition. Their behavior is friendly, non-aggressive and calm. Non-dangerous curiosity is shown to strangers, but at the same time they are not scared themselves and are ready to rush on anyone in order to protect the owner.

These are very mobile and active dogs, loving games, especially with children. Children, they never harm, even by negligence.

They live together with other pets, even with cats, especially if they grew up together. The exceptions are rodents, which they perceive as the subject of hunting. Do not show anxiety, if left alone, can quietly stay alone for several hours.

Dogs do not require increased attention to themselves, content with the manifestations of love and affection that the owner provides them. Feel good and have a lonely owner, and in a large family.

However, Pomski always chooses a pet for himself, which will become for him a somewhat great authority.

Attachment to the host is even greater than that of the Husky, but the half-breed is more independent than the spitz: it does not need to constantly stay close to the host. Walking never initiates quarrels with other dogs.

There are also negative manifestations of their character. During walks, a predisposition to escape may appear, when his curiosity may end in either a merry adventure or some sort of trouble. These dogs are big lovers of digging holes in flower beds and garden beds, and they can make a complete mess of scattered and scattered things around the house.

These pets can show in their character any peculiarities of the behavior of the Spitz and Huskies, as well as acquire their own in time with them in accordance with the surrounding reality.

      Care features

Dogs of this domestic breed remarkably exist in the city, in any apartment, and in a private house, but they are not adapted to live on the street. In the apartment the pet must have a private place to sleep and rest. This may be any room where he is allocated a place with soft bedding.

The dog does not require any special care.

The main requirements for the maintenance of the pet are regular walking, grooming, periodic preventive visits to the vet.

Visits to the veterinary clinic are recommended on schedule: a healthy dog needs two visits per year. Metis are vaccinated in the same way as dogs of other breeds. At the age of 6-8 weeks, they need to make the first vaccine. Prevention of external and intestinal parasites is carried out every 3 months.

A home-kept pet needs regular and long-term walking, during which it needs to dump its stored energy. Activity in dogs is individual and corresponds to their dimensions: the larger the dog, the more he needs to exercise.

Each dog needs to walk 2 times a day and load it with physical activity, which only improves the well-being of the pet. The duration of the walk must be at least an hour. Running is especially useful for them, so it should take a lot of time for a walk.

The unique ability of mestizo wool protects them from dirt and water, so dogs do not need to be bathed very often. It is recommended to bathe them 1-2 times a month using shampoos designed specifically for dogs. After bathing, the pet must be thoroughly wiped with a soft towel, and then dried with a hair dryer.

However, his thick coat needs regular brushing about 2-3 times in 7 days. During the molt, which happens twice a year (in spring and autumn), it is necessary to comb it out every day using a brush with natural bristles.

Especially carefully it is necessary to care for the wool near the muzzle and near the ears, since here most often the wool falls and woolen clumps form. Dogs do not need a haircut, only trimming between the toes on the paws is possible.

Mandatory is hygienic care for the eyes and ears of the animal. Removal of dirt in the ears is carried out using clean tampons moistened with a special lotion, which can be purchased at a veterinary pharmacy. It should also cut their nails as they regrowth about once a month. It is also necessary to care for the pet's teeth: they are often required (several times a week) to be cleaned with a special toothpaste.

An interesting feature is characteristic of this breed - they lick their fur, like cats.

      Feeding rules

Food of dogs of this breed is no different from the nutrition of other dogs. Since pomski are classified as active dogs, the power must be complete, properly balanced, high-calorie. It is recommended that pets a natural type of food, but possibly feeding dry food.

Shall include natural food products with a high content of vitamins, trace elements and have an average calorific value. This is achieved by controlling the carbohydrate content. Natural nutrition must be supplemented with mineral-vitamin complexes to provide the animal with a daily rate of vitamins and minerals.

The basic rule of feeding of mestizos is the observance of the necessary content and the correct ratio of nutrients: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. A large proportion of the diet belongs proteins contained in meat and fish. Meat products should be up to 60% of the total daily diet.

Adult pets are fed twice a day: in the morning and in the evening.

The advantage of dry ready-made feeds is that they already contain all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and are properly balanced. There is also no need for counting calories. For dogs of this breed, it is necessary to choose food only of the super premium class, since this is the highest quality feed. Food class economy use is strictly prohibited.

It is also recommended to constantly feed the same brand of food. Frequent changes in the brand of feed may lead to diseases of the digestive system. When feeding dry food, fresh water should always be in unlimited quantities and is available to the dog.

Dry food can sometimes be supplemented with wet - canned food, pate, having different flavors.

      Upbringing and training

Pomski differ highly intelligent, which they inherited from both his parents. Metysas are easy to train. They learn and perform a lot of teams are very well aware of its owner, like to be praised.

But individual instances are able to show the independence peculiar to the Siberian parent, which often leads to atypical solutions to the problem and affects the training.

Only patience and good attitude can achieve from the pet obedient and accurate performance of the team. Being rude can make him nervous and uncommunicative.

Metis has a psychological sensitivity: he understands the emotional mood of the owner and easily adapts to it. He reacts negatively to shouting and even more so to physical punishment and, despite his rather stable nervous system, becomes touchy and uncontrollable, and can be obstinate.

Since this is still quite a young and rare breed, dog trainers cannot offer any specific and specific advice on education and training. However, the method of unobtrusive involvement in the learning process with elements of the game is always effective. The implementation of simple standard commands is quite accessible to a pet. Having mastered the team, he is attentive and diligent.

Starting to train and raise a dog should be from 6 months of age. There are certain rules that must be followed.

        • You need to start training with the simplest teams in a playful way according to the principle - from simple to more complex.
        • Take into account the individual abilities of the pet - not all dogs are able to execute the command from the first time. In case of failure, persistence and repetition must be exercised.
        • Training is best done at home after a walk: at this time the dog has a good mood.
        • Successful execution of the team must be encouraged to dainty. Failure can not be punished and scolded.
        • Teams need to be constantly and unobtrusively repeated in everyday life.
        • Training is recommended in the intervals between feedings, but not after them.

Rearing dogs should also be accompanied by the following requirements:

          • the pet should never be near during the meal of the owners, the more you can not give him food from the table;
          • it is necessary to forbid him to sleep on the beds of his masters, not to allow him to sit in their chair;
          • The dog must clearly know its place in the apartment.

Pomski is quite capable of learning such standard commands as “To me” and “Place”, “Near” and “Sit”, “Lie down”, “Give” and “Aport”, also prohibiting “Fu”, “No” and “You can’t ". During the walk, you can teach him to understand and perform “Walk”, “Barrier”, “Polzi”.

Training any dog, including Pomski, is a long and rather time-consuming process, requiring a host of patience and perseverance.

Experts advise people who want to have a puppy at home for this unusual breed to get acquainted with the peculiarities of the nature and behavior of its parents, the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian Spitz, since a pet can unpredictably inherit any of its positive or negative traits.
