Classical and extraordinary, modern and distant past, gloom and romance. All this characterizes the style of gothic clothing - one of the relatively young, but having deep roots in fashion trends.
Gothic style in clothes: medieval motifs in a new way
To understand the modern fashion trend, you need to go back a few centuries into the past and get acquainted with stylish “ancestors”.
The general concept of "Gothic" appeared in the Renaissance and meant the flow in the art of European countries of the late XI - XIII centuries. The Gothic trend, which changed the Romanesque style, affected architecture, sculpture and, of course, fashion, which was distinguished by:
- dark majesty;
- fascinating coldness;
- beautiful rigor.
And it literally penetrated everything around. Artists and art historians of the Renaissance called this period and all that belonged to him "barbaric."
Like much that is associated with art and fashion, the Gothic style originated in France, and reached its peak in the historical region of this country - Burgundy.
The “barbarous” fashion of the Middle Ages had several options - each class had its own tendencies and preferences. They were united by their elongated proportions and silhouettes. In the trend were shoes with long noses (sometimes up to half a meter), pointed hats, a thin, tightly laced waist, teeth on the edges of the clothes and long loops. The higher the position of the ladies, the longer the train was. Fashion trend was drapery in the abdomen.
The top outfits were represented by semi-circular or round cloaks, fastened with a massive buckle on the chest.
Bright colors and all sorts of ornaments prevailed in the color palette.
After some time, other styles have replaced Gothic. It seemed that she had outlived her life and went down in history. But after a few centuries - at the turn of the XVIII – XIX centuries, it was briefly revived, absorbing new rules and trends.
The next round of popularity of the “well-forgotten old” fell on the newest history.
Features of modern gothic
Modern gothic clothing, by which the Goths (fans of the subculture of the same name), express themselves, is significantly different from the one that was in fashion almost ten centuries ago. The modern Gothic style in the 70s of the last century was born, or rather, revived in a modernized form. In addition to the features of medieval fashion, elements of punk style and modern trends are woven into it.
The main distinctive features of the "barbaric" trend in modern clothing are:
- Black color and its cold combination with white or red. Minimal use of saturated shades of purple, burgundy, green and blue is also allowed.
- The presence of clear silhouettes and straight lines.
- Extravagance.
- The narrow top and free bottom, designed to make the figure angular and hide feminine forms.
- The use of white (light) jewelry of a particular theme. Favorite metal is ready - silver, which symbolizes the moon and emphasizes the deathly pallor of its owners.
- Sharp corners that may appear in collars, cuffs, hems, or even prints on garment details.
- The use of textured fabrics and materials with an interesting texture.
From his medieval ancestor, he inherited gloom and severity.
Diversity
Currently, the Gothic style is divided into several areas, which, of course, do not depend on the social status of his fans. Rather, it is a matter of taste and preferences.
- Antique (romantic), using the fashion trends of the XVIII century and characterized by the presence of lace, gloves to the elbows, maxi dresses, corsets and veils.
- Vampire, which is a kind of imitation of "cinema" vampires. Girls who adhere to this direction, diligently emphasize their sexuality, use bright red details in their clothes or make-up (lipstick, nail polish).
- Metallized (rock). Overlaps with the "metal" in the music and uses leather things, complemented by all sorts of chains, collars, spikes. Allowed here is the use of latex clothing.
- Cyber direction. Cleverly combines elements of Gothic with industrial. When creating images, preference is given to artificial fabrics, acid shades, shoes on a high platform.
- Lolita (J-Goth). Direction comes from Japan. Its main attributes are knee-length Gothic dresses, richly decorated with ruffles and crinoline. Umbrellas, hats, shoes with rounded toes on a high platform are used as accessories.
- Corporate. A kind of "adaptation" of the subculture and its fashion to the requirements of the dress code. It is characterized by minimal use of accessories and the practical absence of makeup.
In addition to these options, in modern Gothic can be distinguished;
- Victorian and Renaissance ready, embodying images of the past;
- androgynous, trying to "disguise" for the outfits and cosmetics their true gender;
- glitter and faerie-ready, which include only girls who dye their hair in uncharacteristic bright colors, braid dreadlocks and pigtails.
- Western ready, reminiscent of movies about cowboys.
Representatives of the latter group are the smallest and are less common than others.
