History stuff
A trench coat or trench coat is a classic, one might say, canonical model of a military raincoat that has its own characteristics. The trench coat is a double-breasted overclothes of medium length, having a turn-down collar, cuffs, improvised shoulder straps on the shoulders, as well as a belt with a buckle, a slot and a slit at the back that can be fastened. Trench coats sew from moisture-proof material, and these clothes are versatile, stylish and suitable for any occasion.
The trench first appeared in the early 1900s, when infantry soldiers from Britain needed an easier replacement for heavy overcoats from serge. Trenchcot was invented by Thomas Burberry, the owner of a gabardine factory. Wear-resistant and raincoat protecting infantrymen and gave the name "trench coat" (trench coat).
Since this thing is almost impossible to demolish, war veterans continued to wear trenches with pleasure in peacetime, as they gained their popularity in civil society. In the women's wardrobe trench coat appeared thanks to Coco Chanel. Known for her revolutionary approach to fashion, Koko decided that it would be unforgivable to leave such a comfortable and stylish thing only to men. Later, trench coats began to be worn by actors and actresses, then the popularity of this type of raincoat soared to the limit.
It is curious that the trench coat reached our days without any changes, and that the celebrities, that ordinary citizens who wear it, still look modern and very fashionable. Nowhere is gone and convenience. Thanks to the slot on the back, trench does not hold down movements, and the classic belt with a buckle allows you to fit it to any shape and protect yourself from wind or rain.
Trench and French: Differences
Many people confuse these two concepts, but in fact things are very different. So, the jacket is a tunic adapted for civil needs. As a rule, the jacket is made of soft, dense fabric, and has a soft, straight, turn-down collar, which can be lifted and fastened with buttons. Usually, service jackets have large pockets on the floor and chest, which are also fastened with a button. The military wore jacket, specially stitched without a collar at all, so that you can see the shirt and tie.
Trench has completely different characteristics. First, it is a raincoat that repels water. Traditionally, like Burberry, other manufacturers sew gabardine trench coats. The trench coat always has a double-breasted turn-down collar, the cuffs on the sleeves are regulated by straps and clasps, and the slit at the back is buttoned. In addition, the trench coat is always provided with a belt that has a D-shaped buckle.
Cloak and trench coat - is there any difference?
In fact, the trench coat is a narrower meaning of the word "cloak" and has with it a number of features. As we have said, trench coats have their own cut and silhouette, and only in this form can a cloak be called a trench coat. The raincoat itself can be absolutely any - with a zipper or buttons, be long, to the very floor, have a flared or A-shaped silhouette.
What is different from a coat?
Despite the fact that the name “trench coat” is a combination of the words trench - “trench” and coat - “coat”, it has little in common with a coat. The main difference is that the coat is sewn from a fabric that does not repel water: drape, cashmere, twill or wool. Just like a coat, a coat can be single-breasted, unlike a trench coat. In fact, the raincoat is an unheated version of the coat, and the trench coat is a variation on the theme of this clothing. The coat and trench have something in common - initially both of these elements of outerwear were invented for the military, only the coat was intended for sailors.
What to wear?
Trenchcoat is a basic classic in a women's wardrobe, and it allows combinations with various elements of clothing. The trench looks best in a casual style: it combines well with jeans of any model, sweaters and turtlenecks under the throat, skirts, dresses and sundresses. The universal length of the trench coat - just above the knee, gives the girl the opportunity to wear a skirt of any length - mini, midi or in the floor. However, in the case of an overly short trench coat, one should not fasten it, since it is considered a bad form to be outerwear that is longer than the hem of the skirt or dress.
To create a street chic look, you can wear wide flying pants and a plaid shirt, a skirt with a geometric print or skinny skinny jeans will help you to add a glamor look. As for shoes, sneakers or moccasins are equally well suited to trench coats, as well as wedge or platform shoes.
Since traditionally trench coats are sewn in discreet colors — sandy, beige, gray, less often black, this outerwear is ideal for a business style. The trench will make a wonderful pair with a business suit, a pencil skirt and a light blouse or shirt. Depending on your habits, it is permissible to wear heeled shoes and loafers. With trench good and high "army boots" on a rough sole, and boots with a thin stiletto or heel-glass.

But fitted or A-shaped cocktail dresses will look good. Trenchcoat can be supplemented with long gloves to the elbow, as well as a small clutch. If the party does not mean being in the room, the trench can not be fastened, but only tied with a belt - so will be visible clothes, worn down. As an accessory, you can use a light scarf tied around the neck, as well as sunglasses.
