When working with mounting foam for the installation of doors, moments when the material falls on the surface of the door leaf are not excluded. In this case, it is important to know what and how to properly wipe this material without harming the door. Consider the important nuances, taking into account the peculiarities of pollution and different types of surfaces.
Peculiarities of pollution
The basis of the mounting foam is polyurethane, which is fed from a cylinder nozzle under pressure from a mixture of pressure gases. Polyurethane can consist of one and two components: polyurethane and a hardener. Good foam has high adhesion to almost any surface. Exceptions are polyethylene, teflon, oil and silicone. In the composition of any foam there are surfactants that directly affect its ability to uniform foaming. If the composition is not aligned correctly, large bubbles and voids will be visible in the frozen foam.
Used professional foam is usually characterized by controlled yield, small change in volume, large volume of suitable product.
In the repair of premises mainly use one-component composition. It can be pumped in liquid form into cylinders, which differ in the method of supplying foam: for domestic use and for professional work. Consider the features of each type.
- Household cans supplied with a nozzle in the form of a plastic tube-nozzle. The supply of the composition of such devices is extremely uneven, the pressure is not regulated. Therefore, often the foam goes jerky and is served in more quantities than is necessary.
- Professional cylinders equipped with a nozzle device that delivers the composition through the mounting gun.
When using a quality gun, the consumption of foam is more controlled, it is possible to squeeze out exactly as much material as is needed for the operation being performed.
The likelihood of excess foam after the completion of the operation is high if the work is carried out using domestic cylinders. In household cylinders uncontrolled consumption of the composition leads to the fact that it increases in volume up to 100%. In addition, the gas is fed unevenly, the balloon begins to "spit". As a result, the foam, displaced from the seam it fills, can more than half cover the surfaces on its two sides. Usually there is a wall on one side, which is not so scary to stain, on the other hand there is a room decoration element.
Since the composition of the foam has a high adhesion to almost any surface, contact with the trim elements in the form of MDF doors, slopes, flooring and others is not recommended. To wipe or wash this building compound is extremely difficult. When using a professional pistol the likelihood of staining with foam elements of the decoration is negligible, but it exists.
To avoid accidental contamination during the installation of structures it is necessary to protect their decorative surface. For protection, PVC film or masking tape of the desired width can be used.
Doors are usually protected with transport protective covers, which are recommended to be removed no later than two weeks after installation. If the product does not have a protective coating, the work becomes more difficult.
What can wipe off?
In the process of work, the assembly can get into the hands or elements of the finish, which it can spoil. Getting into the hands of the composition is not as catastrophic as if it falls on an interior or entrance door. All doors have a different coating, so the algorithm of actions will depend on the material of the upper layer.
There are various foam solvents that destroy it. These include acetone, solvents 646, 647, dimexide (sold in pharmacies), white spirit, ready-made tools for washing assembly guns, as well as cosmofen different activity.
Various formulations can be used to effectively remove stains from the foam. Professional products include Penosil Foam Cleaner, Waller, Ultima Professional, Oppa.
When choosing, you need to focus on the type of foam that was selected for installation.
It is preferable to choose the means of the same manufacturer, since each of them has its own secrets-additives in the mounting foam.
- Soudal Pu Remover. One of the good drugs is Soudal Pu Remover paste, designed for the same name foam. To remove trapped on the decorative surface of the composition paste is applied with a brush and left for 15 - 20 minutes. The remains are removed from the surface with a spatula (preferably not hard). After the procedure, wipe the surface dry.
- Acetone. Like any solvent, softens the stain material. When carrying out work requires accuracy. It is important to ensure that the composition does not destroy the treated surface.
- Means for cleaning assembly guns. Usually they are easy to clean fresh foam, not having time to completely polymerize (dry). For frozen foam, these formulations may be useless.
- Preparations for the dried foam. These compounds are good enough, but before using a particular drug, you must check its effect in an inconspicuous place. If the decorative surface is not destroyed, does not become cloudy, the composition can be applied on the open area of the door leaf or box.
- Cosmofen. The strongest of the preparations for the removal of polyurethane foam is the composition number 5. The number 20 is the most benign. Cosmophen is a demanded remedy, while No. 20 can be used to clean the mounting foam from clothes without damaging the fibers of the fabric.
- Cloth napkin. Removes sticky foam without polymerization. After mechanical removal of the defect, after 20-30 minutes it is necessary to treat the stain with an ordinary detergent, soda or solvent that does not damage the surface to be cleaned.
How to clean: effective ways
Not for nothing in the construction market means for removing foam are presented in a wide range. In each case, you must use a certain tool. Consider several options for removing the foam from the surfaces of different materials, given the different coating of doors.
Metal with paint
The metal door with powder coating or painted with baked hammer enamel is particularly durable layer of paint. Solvents will not spoil it.
Just in case, you must first try the action of the solvent in the lower corner of the box, which will later be closed with a floor plinth.
Foam should not try to remove, while it is not in the polymerized state. This will lead to the fact that the door remains smeared area of a larger area. It is necessary to wait until the entire surface of the lump is covered with a film and dries a little. Then it is necessary to carefully take up the formed ball and break it off.
If the foam does not hit a drop, but crawled into a fur coat, you can cut it off with a sharp painting knife. Defective area should be cleaned with a fine abrasive, so as not to leave scratches. This will help scrub the residual foam.
If a stain remains, it is best to treat it with a solvent from the list. If there is an opportunity to buy a foam remover from the same manufacturer whose product was used when installing the door, this will be the best way. You must carefully read what surfaces can not handle the proposed composition.
Varnished
It is imperative to wait for the polymerization of the foam to a thick dough or soft rubber. Easily pulling the upper part of the lump, it is necessary to separate the foam from the stained surface. Usually with such a manipulation there are no traces on the surface of the door. Small splashes are easy to remove with a dry microfiber cloth. If there are traces of foam, you can soak them with dimexidum (it softens the foam in 2-3 minutes) and remove the remnants of a napkin. If the varnish dims, it can be polished with ordinary furniture polish.
Veneered and eco-sheeting
These materials have a relief surface. If you try to use dimexide to remove foam, it can destroy the pattern that imitates wood fibers. Therefore, you must first try a mechanical surface cleaning. To do this, you can use a knife or a plastic spatula. You can try to slightly clean the surface with a fine-grained abrasive.
After mechanical cleaning, the surface should be washed with a damp sponge, using a hard side, then wipe dry with a clean cloth. To fix the result, the surface is treated with soda solution.
Glass base
Decorative exhibitions improve the appearance of any design element. But when splashed with foam, they lose their decorative appeal and appear sloppy. To clean the glass from the mounting foam, first use a mechanical method of cutting the defect with a sharp painting knife.
If the stain of foam remains on the surface of the glass, how many drops of vegetable oil are applied to it. From this, the foam softens. The stain is wiped with the hard side of an economic sponge, then the surface is wiped dry with a cloth napkin.
With the help of vegetable oils you can remove fresh foam. If the stain is on the surface for a long time, this method will not give the desired results.
Iron door
This surface is the most unassuming. Foam from it is usually considered a mechanical method. The contaminated place is not touched until the assembly is completely dry. After this, the particles of dried foam are removed by hands. If stains remain, in places of contact, the foam is removed by sanding with a fine abrasive or solvent that does not affect the metal coating.
Wooden surface
Recommendations for cleaning a wooden surface are the same as for cleaning a varnished surface. The task is simplified by the fact that the surface of the wood is usually matte. If, after cleaning, a small stain remains, differing in color from the rest of the surface, you can use wax crayon for furniture of a suitable color. These crayons are sold in any specialized furniture hardware store. Simple application of chalk gives a matte surface.
The application of furniture wax in the molten form allows you to get a shiny, as close as possible to the lacquered surface. After application, it can be polished if the decorative coating requires it.
Useful tips
Try not to use household cylinders. They are relevant only in the case of minor repairs, cause a lot of inconvenience, if you need to fill a deep enough seam. Sometimes foam is filled with large openings between the wall and the door, left over by the builders. In this case, it is worthwhile to come up with some additional filling material: cardboard, foam plastic, crumpled paper.
All excess foam after complete drying is cut off with a sharp painting knife, without touching the main surfaces.
Do not rush to apply a solvent, dimexide or helium solution. First you need to try to remove the defects from the sprayed composition mechanically. Only if the effect of this cleaning is zero, it is worth switching to chemical cleaning methods, not forgetting to wash the surface and wipe it dry afterwards.
Hitting the mounting foam on the decorative part of the door is a fixable matter if you follow the step-by-step instructions of the professionals. The attached video contains a phased scheme for the removal of building material.
