The skirt, which is called the gypsy, is represented by a long, free model, which does not constrain movements. It is often bought for dancing or carnival images. The main feature of gypsy skirts is the ability to lift up the edges of the product with straightened arms.

Such a skirt looks good on any figure and perfectly combines with things in ethnic and casual styles. Another advantage of the gypsy skirt is the ability to do it yourself, even if the experience of tailoring is minimal.

Fabrics

Gypsy skirt is usually sewn from bright and easily draped material. It is important that the fabric does not shine and does not crease. Satin, staple, mixed types of fabric, rayon or polyester based fabric are well suited to these conditions.

Fabric colors are most often represented by floral designs. If a monophonic material is used for the gypsy skirt, then ribbons, braid, sequins, beads and embroidery are used in its decoration. Fabrics with a geometric print for gypsy skirts are not suitable.

For the lining of a gypsy skirt the same fabric can be used as for the main part of it, but more often the petticoat is sewn from a suitable in color but cheaper material.

Styles

Gypsy skirt is a wide long model. Most often, such a skirt is sewn along the “sun” style (it is made double or 2.5) with a frill along the bottom.

Many-tiered skirts and blades are also in demand. A frill in a gypsy skirt can be slightly gathered or represented by a multitude of flounces that are tailored to the side. In addition, the frill is one layer or sewn in several layers.

The length of the skirt varies from products in the floor to models, the hem of which passes through the ankle line. For pomp, fishing line can be sewn into the hem (it is sewn at the junction of the main part of the skirt and frill). This skirt should cover the legs, but it does not hamper movement. The smell in the tailoring of gypsy skirts does not apply.

The belt for such a skirt is sewn of average width. They try to make it without an elastic band, so that the product does not crawl in the dance. To make the belt harder, it is treated with interlining, and for the convenience of putting the skirt on, a zipper is sewn into the belt.

You can make a belt with ties at the side, with a small slit on the skirt itself, to dress more comfortably. And if you still want to use a rubber band, let it be dense and not too narrow.

What to wear?

If the gypsy skirt is part of a thematic or dance costume, it is usually supplemented with a tight blouse. This blouse is a short model that closes the stomach. Ruffles are usually present on the sleeves of the blouse.

You can also pick up a regular T-shirt for a bright gypsy skirt, paying attention to the additional accessories. Such an image fits well with a bright color shawl, as well as with ringing bracelets, large earrings and bright beads.

Casual models of gypsy skirts can be worn with T-shirts and tops of a contrasting shade or to match the skirt. A nice addition can be called a corset, and in cool weather, this skirt is quite organically combined with a knitted long jacket.

Sandals or sandals are considered to be the most suitable shoes for gypsy skirts. They can be on a low run or on a wedge. If desired, visually increase the height of recommended shoes with heels.

How to sew your own hands

The preparatory stage in the independent production of a gypsy skirt will be the purchase of all the necessary materials. In addition to the fabric you need to purchase a bias tape, thread and flizelin.

Patterns

To make a pattern, you first need to take measurements. In addition to measuring the circumference of the waist and hips, you should also determine the desired length of the skirt. To build a pattern, first calculate the inner radius of the part. To do this, the waist circumference is divided into 2 pi, that is, 6.28.

For example, with a waist circumference of 63 cm, we divide this figure by 6.28 and get 10 cm. This will be the radius for one pattern “sun”, and since the style for the gypsy skirt requires two “suns”, we divide the radius by two and get 5 cm. This will be the inner radius of the part, which we denote on paper.

We postpone the length of the skirt from it and draw the second radius. As a result, we have either two semicircles, if the skirt length added to the radius will be more than 74 cm (it will not work to fold the fabric), or a quarter of the "sun", when cutting the fabric, fold four times. The resulting cut in such a quarter circle is cut by a common thread.

On average, a skirt requires about 9–13 m of fabric, if its width is 150 cm. From this amount, two “suns” are obtained and the material remains on frills. The frill is made from 10 to 25 cm wide. It requires a fabric tape that will be twice as long as the skirt hem. For the belt, a rectangle is cut out of the main fabric and another one of non-woven fabric.

Sewing

Allocate such stages of making gypsy skirts with their own hands:

  1. Cutting fabric. First you need to attach the pattern to the material and cut it with chalk, taking into account the seam allowances. Next, you should cut out the details of the main skirt, and then cut out the frill and belt separately.
  2. Making the main part of the skirt. Having folded the panels of the product face to each other, it is necessary to sew their side seams, then zip-zag over the edges or treat with an overlock.
  3. Making a frill and sewing it to the skirt. The lower part of the frill should be folded and stitched or treated oblique piping. Ribbon-stitching ribbons sewn together are attached and evenly sewn onto the main part of the skirt.
  4. Making a belt and sewing it to the skirt.
  5. Tailoring a petticoat, if provided in the model.
  6. Dressing the skirt, washing and ironing it.
